H.K. Hummel is the author of Lessons in Breathing Underwater (Sundress, 2020), and Short-Form Creative Writing: A Writer's Guide and Anthology (Bloomsbury, 2018). The second edition of Short-Form Creative Writing: A Writer's Guide and Anthology will be released in January 2026. In addition to receiving nominations for the Pushcart Prize and Best of the Net, her poems have been finalists for the North American Review's James Hearst Poetry Prize, the Terrain.org Poetry Prize, and the Brittingham and Pollak Poetry Prize. She is an associate professor of creative writing at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. In 2006, with Stephanie Lenox, she founded the online literary journal, Blood Orange Review, which is now an integral part of the Washington State University editing and publishing program. She serves on the Blood Orange Review advisory board, and is a member of the National Writing Project Writers Council.
